Breaking: Andes Virus Spreads via Unclear 'Close Contact' – What Passengers Need to Know

Health officials confirmed today that the Andes virus implicated in the ongoing cruise ship outbreak transmits through "close contact," but experts warn the term is dangerously vague. The virus, a rare strain of hantavirus, has infected at least 12 passengers and crew, sparking an urgent investigation into how the pathogen moves between people.

"Close contact is not a simple handshake or casual conversation – it implies sustained, face-to-face interaction," said Dr. Elena Marquez, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Miami. "But with Andes virus, the exact duration and proximity needed for transmission remain unknown."

Background: A Rare but Deadly Virus

Andes virus is the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person, unlike most hantaviruses that jump from rodents to humans. It causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory illness with a fatality rate of 30–50%.

The current outbreak began on the Ocean Voyager cruise ship, which departed from Miami on March 5. The ship remains quarantined off the coast of Florida. Authorities have collected blood samples from all 2,500 passengers and are mapping every interaction among the infected.

Previous studies indicate Andes virus can transmit via saliva, urine, or rodent droppings, but the cruise ship scenario suggests a new route. "We're seeing clusters among cabin mates and dining companions," said Dr. Raj Patel, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "That points to prolonged, close-range exposure."

What Experts Say About 'Close Contact'

"The term 'close contact' is deliberately broad because we still don't know the exact minimum time for infection," explained Dr. Marquez. "But the CDC defines it as being within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period."

However, Dr. Patel cautions that Andes virus may require less time. "One case in Argentina involved a brief hug that led to transmission. So the 15-minute rule might not apply here." Passengers on the Ocean Voyager have been advised to wear N95 masks and avoid shared cabins.

"We're telling people: if you shared a drink, a kiss, or a very close conversation, you may be at risk," added Dr. Marquez. "That's the level of intimacy we're talking about."

What This Means for Passengers and the Public

The ambiguity of 'close contact' leaves many passengers in limbo. Those who sat next to an infected person at dinner for 20 minutes are considered close contacts (see background above), but those who passed in a hallway for 5 seconds are not.

"If you were in the same enclosed space – like a cabin or small restaurant – for more than a few minutes, assume you're a contact," said Dr. Patel. The CDC has launched a contact tracing app for the ship, asking passengers to recall every person they were within arm's length of for more than 10 seconds.

Beyond the cruise ship, the outbreak raises broader concerns. "Andes virus is extremely rare, but its ability to spread person-to-person makes it a potential pandemic threat," said Dr. Marquez. "Understanding 'close contact' is the key to stopping it." Passengers have been asked to quarantine for 21 days. The ship is expected to dock in Miami on Friday, but only after all tests are processed.

Health officials stress that hantavirus does not spread through air over long distances. "It's not like COVID-19," Dr. Patel added. "But the 'close contact' definition must be tightened now to prevent further cases."
