Reimagining the American Dream: A Conversation on Democracy, Community, and Opportunity
The Promise and the Question
What does it mean to hold on to the best parts of ourselves and our communities? A few months ago, I explored the idea of staying gold—preserving the core values that define the American Dream. But preserving is not a passive act. It requires deliberate effort, courageous conversations, and a willingness to examine our past, present, and the future we wish to build. In 2025, the American Dream feels more like a question than a promise: Can we reshape this dream so that it works for everyone, not just a fortunate few?

A Shared Commitment to Democracy
That question is exactly why I am honored to be joining Alexander Vindman for a discussion at the historic Cooper Union Great Hall. Colonel Vindman’s unwavering defense of democratic ideals—even at great personal cost—embodies the courage required to keep the American Dream alive. Our joint talk will explore how democracy, community, and economic mobility intersect, and how we can build systems that extend opportunity to all. Though our backgrounds differ vastly, we share a deep conviction that every person’s American Dream is worth fighting for.
Two Paths to the Same Goal
Colonel Vindman’s Stand for Integrity
Alexander Vindman has lived multiple lifetimes of service. Born in the Soviet Union, he immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in Brooklyn. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for 21 years, earning a Purple Heart after being wounded in Iraq and later becoming Director of European Affairs for the National Security Council. When faced with a choice between complicity and upholding the values he had sworn to protect, he chose integrity. That decision cost him his career but never his honor. His story is a powerful lesson in civic duty.
Building Communities Online and Off
My own path has been different. I build platforms on the internet—like Stack Overflow and Discourse—and I write about how people interact online. For years, I have studied how communities thrive or fail, and how digital spaces can foster fairness, participation, and constructive discourse. Whether you are governing a nation or moderating a forum, the same principles apply: clear expectations, equitable systems, firm boundaries, and a shared sense of purpose. I believe that by focusing on these fundamentals, we can create lasting structural change—not in every area, but in something foundational. This is about moving beyond individual generosity and toward systems that deliver security, dignity, and possibility for all.

The Need for Systemic Change
The American Dream has traditionally been tied to the idea that hard work alone guarantees success. But that promise feels increasingly fragile. Economic mobility has stalled, and the gap between the haves and have-nots continues to widen. Addressing this requires more than charity; it demands redesigning the structures that shape our lives—from education and healthcare to housing and digital access. As Colonel Vindman’s story shows, individual courage is essential, but we also need collective action to create a society where courage is not a prerequisite for opportunity.
An Honest Discussion Ahead
I cannot promise easy answers. What I can promise is an honest, unflinching conversation about where we stand and what we must do next. The talk at Cooper Union will not shy away from the challenges we face. Instead, it will invite us to consider how democracy, community, and economic mobility can be reimagined to serve everyone. Whether you join us in person or follow the discussion online, I hope you will bring your own questions and your own vision for a dream that stays gold—not as a passive inheritance, but as an active responsibility we all share.
